Standard fees apply per state law. Copies cost $0.50 per page. Certified copies are $5.00 for the first page and $1.25 for each page after that. Court record copies run $5.00 per document. Recording a deed or mortgage starts at $15.00 for the first page. The office takes cash, checks, money orders, and credit cards for some services.
What sets Suffolk County apart is its online records system. The Clerk's office has converted millions of paper documents into electronic images since 2000. This means you can search and view many records from your computer. The online system covers land records from 1987 to the present. You can search by address, property tax map ID, last name, corporation name, liber and page, index number, UCC number, or business name. Viewing actual document images requires a paid subscription, but the index search itself is available online.
How to Search Suffolk County Records
Suffolk County gives you more online options than most counties. The County Clerk's Online Records system lets you search land records from 1987 forward. You can look up documents by name, address, or tax map ID. The index is free to search. To view the full document image, you need a subscription. You can also order certified copies online through the system.
For court cases, the eCourts system covers Supreme Court civil cases from Suffolk County. Search by name or index number. This free tool works for all 62 counties.
Criminal records are available through the Criminal History Record Search from the Office of Court Administration. You need a name and date of birth, and a fee applies. This covers convictions from all New York courts.
If you want to visit in person, the Clerk's office in Riverhead has public terminals where you can search records. Staff can help you navigate the system. For land records, bring the property address or the names of the parties. For court records, have the index number or party names ready.

Types of Public Records
Suffolk County's land records include deeds, mortgages, mortgage satisfactions, assignments, easements, liens, and lis pendens. The online system has over 2.5 million of these documents imaged and searchable. Court records include Supreme Court civil case files, judgments, and court orders.
Vital records are separate from the County Clerk. Birth and death certificates come from the New York State Department of Health or local registrars in each town. Marriage licenses are issued by the town clerk where the couple applies. Suffolk County has many towns and villages, each with its own clerk for these purposes.
District Court records in Suffolk County cover small claims and civil cases under $15,000. These are separate from Supreme Court records. The District Court has its own clerk. Family Court and Surrogate's Court also maintain their own records. Family Court files are mostly sealed. Surrogate's Court handles probate, wills, and estates.
The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office handles its own records for arrests and bookings. Police records from local departments (like those in Brookhaven, Islip, or Huntington) are kept by each department. You would file a FOIL request with the specific agency to get those records.
